The 44th is the proud owner of a 3 Pounder of 4ft. Blomfield Artillery piece, which since it was acquired has been the subject of  major  refurbishment which is very nearly complete.  Currently it enjoys the role of being part of our living history presentation and will be eventually be crewed with the appropriate team so as to take part in events.

It is mounted on a reproduction Block train gun carriage circa 1779-1810. Capable of firing ball or case shot, this is of course an extremely light and  manouverable piece, ideally suited for some of the impossible terrain encountered by the artillery in the Penninsular. It was the lightest field gun used by the Royal Artillery at the time.

Before Refurbishment

Before Refurbishment

The Royal Regiment of Artillery originated in early 1700's to ensure that a regular force of gunners was readily available. The British artillery of the Napoleonic Wars was well trained, efficient and motivated. Their officers were very much educated professionals. They did not, could not, buy their commissions or promotions. However, the effects of all this excellent training and schooling was often negated by the small size of the artillery corps and the fact that promotion was by seniority rather than by merit.

General Foy wrote: "The artillery holds the first rank in the army; it is better paid, its recruits are more carefully selected, and its period of enlistment is limited to 12 years."

After Refurbishment

This development is a real opportunity for any one wanting to become part of a Royal Foot artillery unit. Attached to the 44th, you will enjoy all the benefits of an established unit - but on the field will often become part of the allied Artillery battery. If you are interested, you know how to get in touch.
